Many groups advocate for human rights, civil rights and civil liberties. To take two examples, the Human Rights Campaign advances the cause of lesbian and gay civil rights. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) "champions the rights set forth in the Bill of Rights." Both groups often take controversial stands. The ACLU opposed anti-terrorism legislation that passed Congress by a large margin in October 2001. The ACLU argues that this legislation gives unwarranted power to the executive branch of our government that could be used against U.S. citizens in criminal investigations unrelated to terrorism. The ACLU was also against campaign finance reform legislation that passed in 2001 on the grounds that it would limit freedom of speech.
