The National Education Association, a professional organization and union of elementary and secondary school employees and others interested in education, gives Democrats high marks. The National Education Association is opposed to vouchers and supports improvement in public education on all levels. It lobbies for increased education funding, benefits for teachers, school safety, the expansion of after school and Head Start programs, etc.
The Children's Defense Fund (CDF) is focused on beefing up federal programs
to enhance public education, such as expanding Head Start funding. It is concerned
about the thousands of children becoming victims of violence. Thus, it favors
gun safety legislation and domestic violence programs. The CDF considered it
a victory that the Child Tax Credit was greatly improved in 2001, providing
major new tax assistance to millions of low income families with children
