The above graphs show very clearly how the National Organization for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), one of the largest organizations advocating for minority rights, and the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (LULAC) feel about our two major political parties. A specific bill that concerned LULAC in 1998, for example, was H.R. 629. LULAC views this bill as an example of environmental racism. Why? Because it allows the construction of a nuclear waste dump near Sierra Blanca, Texas, a poor Mexican American community, already the site of one of the largest sewage sludge projects in the country. This bill passed 305-117 in July 1998. Besides the opposition of both groups to environmental racism, both also support affirmative action, gender equity and greater spending on education and social needs.
